Cinema in Saudi Arabia

Texts by: Eduardo Moreno ®

After 40 years, cinema opened in Saudi Arabia.  The Seventh Art is no longer forbidden. Long lines and seats reserved for next six months explains the euphoria of this new old thing. Not only cinema and popcorns are new, but the fact that movie theaters are not segregated by gender.

Openness is in the air and in social changes as women driving cars. The place where these pictures were taken is not only a cinema hall, but a major undertaking of restaurants, stores, coffee places, and big malls in the King Abdullah rich financial district. These pictures depict the atmosphere outside the screen surrounding this main event, which speaks about economic change, huge business, architectural design and decoration, and deep social transformations.
